As it says on the tin, General and off Topic area, talk about anything in here (within reason!)

VW Golf based on Austin 1100!

Post by Paulc »

I read these comments on a site commenting on the revised Fiesta:

One needs to remember, of course, that that Golf platform came out of VW's c1966 strip down of Europe's then best selling car, the Austin 11/1300.

They were desperate to develop a viable base for a new front drive range to replace the stalwart rear engine Beetle-based stuff that was then fading in the market.

Astonishingly their BMC 1100 serially re-developed range is still with us.

But VW got it right ... bet a Golf out handles an Austin!

Virtually all major manufacturers use competitors' cars for drive appraisals, strip down and analysis. Some even donate their new models to competitors on a reciprocal basis. Good to discover what the opposition is doing but even then, you are at least 3 years behind latest developments on the next cycle plan...

So many examples of shared platforms and powertrains across different manufacturers. Both have very expensive development and tooling costs...
