One of my Divemasters is 72, and helps me with students on open water dives here in the Uk! He is currently 'gone diving' in Bali for a couple of Months with His Son.
It is never too late, and you are never too old, I will bet you get in the water at any opportunity, living where you are Eddie. 8)

At 58 (my current age) my father was knocked down by a car and seriously injured whilst on holiday in Malta. No broken bones but lots of tendon and ligament damage as well as head injuries... for months afterwards he struggled to walk from the lounge to the bathroom... He was pensioned off by BT, never worked again and could so easily have become a couch potato but he had the fighting spirit. Every step was an effort but he walked a few steps further each time and eventually was able to leave the house again and walk to the shops. A little further down the road was the canal basin and one day he made it here and soon he was venturing down the tow path every day. Rain or shine he walked that canal tow path, always the same route but each day, going a little further than the previous. Eventually he was was able to walk a mile, two miles, then five, ten. Soon he was joining the Long Distance Walkers Association and out with like minded people...

On his 62 birthday he walked 62 miles... 40 of them on an organised walk with the LDWA... he was apparently out of the house for 19 hours and only stopped for a pub lunch. At 70 he took up fell running as he found there wasn't enough hours in the day to get his fix...

Great inspirational and moving story Neil. Regardless I was still expecting a comical punchline - mea culpa...

The punch line (well it knocked me for six... ) was, six years later he was diagnosed with Lymphoma and didn't make 78. He'd never smoked, only drank in moderation, ate his 'five a day', long before it became popularaised, having been vegetarian for 30 years and was very careful to eat a balanced diet and was one of those people who hardly visited a doctor in his life...

The beard grew when I was 21 and working away from home for a month. I was bet that I wouldn't dare go home like it so accepted the challenge. She hated it so it stayed, pretty much the last 37 years...

I believe I was a trend setter, just 30 years ahead of my time...
