Not quite. I work for a private company that works to support the NHS and provide software tools. The data we are allowed access to is not open, identifiable or shared willy-nilly. The "stories" that came out last year in the media were are at the least misleading .. the data that research companies and the like can have is anonymised so we have no way of knowing who the patients are. And they don't .. they are interested in stats not individuals.

More data is lost by accident than lost by sharing .. and not by the third-party companies or they would lose their contract and licence to work with the NHS.

But the NHS is learning. Most NHS laptops don't hold any patient data and can't .. the drives are locked so you have to save the data on the internal servers .. and USB ports just don't work apart from keyboards and mice. No drivers for sticks, cd writers, etc.
