the beer thread

As it says on the tin, General and off Topic area, talk about anything in here (within reason!)

I've still got about 10 pints of Rebellion Smuggler to consume first ...

PS Brewdog have opened up near Beaconsfield .. I need to visit them when someone else is driving!

OK .. at long last I can provide some feedback on the collection above: And No, I did not try them all on the same day .. it took a few days to get through these! The Rebellion went and then I went on holiday!

Republik: Not impressed .. had a very odd taste which I couldn't describe or want to repeat

Knight of the Garter: again .. not great .. a bit "wishy-washy" and not much flavour

Conqueror: Now this one hit the spot! A Black IPA (reminded me of the Black Pilsner I had in Banff, Alberta). tasty and oh so drinkable .. and I only had one bottle

Simple, cold lager which when, the temps were 28-31C, was just nice to keep in the hotel room fridge ..

Seems to be THE beer of Madeira as I had this pretty much everywhere I went and some on tap!! I succumbed to ordering a litre once but my excuse was it was really hot and we had walked about 6km along the sea front!!

Had a day out in Norwich (somewhere I've never dallied before) with the latest squeeze and came across the Gardeners Arms/Murderers. Noticed it had twelve ales on tap so thought it rude not to... Of the twelve there was only Doombar and Woodfords Wherry that I recognised and the Doombar was off anyway...

I was in Murderers a few weeks back. Only my 2nd ever visit to Norwich. Fine pub. By coincidence they had a beer festival on at the time, and like Neil's experience, most were unknown to me. The pub made my top 7 of the 17 I drank at that weekend. The Fat Cat pubs stole the top spots, though they are a bit of a hike from the centre. Norwich's pub scene is not far behind Derby's.

My local Brewery, Rebellion, has just released a new limited one based on the old Wethered's recipe .. Winter Royal .. a nice fruity 5.4 which at 8:45am this morning was a real treat (Only had a small taster I can assure you!)

Not only did the guys at the brewery get a small barrel up to the shop to try they interrupted filling minis to fill me a 3 litre bottle .. now that is what I call "Service!" And it was the first sale of the new ale!! Bet it sells quickly!

So if you are ever in the Marlow area, drop in and pay them a visit .. you will be pleasantly surprised ... bet you won't leave empty handed either!! http://www.rebellionbeer.co.uk/

Pics and further reviews from Christmas Eve onwards ..

Found this in the Two Lifeboats at Sherringham. It's a seasonal ale called 'Brian' from the Black Sheep brewery...

No pictures but I had a really black ale tonight called "Black Pearl". 4.2 I think. Quite smooth. Might have been the Milestone brewery. (Quick check on web confirms that!)

Odd as the local Rebellion monthly is quite dark, more dark reddish brown, and a little on the caramel side. But just as suppable.

I've been enjoying Batemans, 'East Coast Screamer' the last couple of weeks...

For Batemans, who are not noted for their light hoppy ales, it's rather nice. Shame it's a seasonal ale and likely to disappear for ever after a few weeks...
