Hi ampwhu thanks for the support. How did you remove yours then?
I have only just rigged up my simple lifting frame using scaffolding tubes made into a frame. I bought a Clarke 500kg block and tackle last week from Machine Mart. I lowered the engine with box still attached down onto the deck. I thinK last time I took the engine out, (1984 ish?) I removed the box first then used my trolley jack under the engine but didnt want to struggle like that

Just another item to report upon
Last year I posted a few times to say the least re my fuel problems and ended up fitting the glass bowled filter which acts as a sediment trap. I have took the filter off during the angine bay work and a photo is attached showing the amount of sediment in the bottom of the glass bowl. Since it was last cleaned I guess Ive done about 300 miles. This will be cleaned out prior to re-fitting. Its one of the best mods Ive done in the trouble its prevented
Im going to remove the steering box tomorrow all being well while the engines outand will strip it down as Im sure theres some wear there and want to check it out. Should end up fitting a new shaft seal. I think remember A35lad fitted an "O" ring so may do that
More photos will follow

Hi all

Just been doing bits tonight but will give it more of a crack either Saturday or Sunday as my garage is small and have to push the car back after removing the trailer near the door and its messing around for just a short slot of time
I took the steering box off last night and idler and washed em down
Tonight took idler shaft out of steering box and usinga small screwdriver cut and prized out the cork oil seal
The box dare I say it was empty of any oil shame up on me. I remembered I didnt top it up before as didnt want it to leak out for MOT test
I have a jar of "O" rings and seals but there wasnt any of the correct size so will get one hopefully tomorrow
The shaft and its bush are not worn so thats good
I made a gasket for the box cover out of some gasket paper I have. See photos
Also took out the engine block brass drain tap as it drips slightly. I took it apart and using some grinding paste "lapped" into its tapered fit and then cleaned it all up of any paste. Will see if that works.
Noted the the block seemed gunged up when I poked a screw driver through the tap hole into the block. It realy did take some pushing in. Any body got best idea for flushing out?
Any way some photos attached
I will be back!

Regards

john could i suggest that you remove all the old core plugs and then you'll have access to all that side of the block. flush it through with a jet wash.

if the hole is partially blocked it may pay to get the core plugs out especially the one at the back of the block & have a good look inside & basically scrape as much sludge out to start with as if the drain plug is blocked or even partially you can bet that behind no4 piston the water jacket is too thus causing the rear of the engine to get very hot to the extreme of burning the paint, also it may pay to get the head off to look or poke down the water jacket

Good work John, the steering box rebuild is something I should have done on every one of my A35's, all of them leak like a sieve! Let us know how you get on (re leaks) :)

A leaking manual steering box as on our cars is not reason for failure, just an advisory item.

Thanks chaps

ampwhu and Nick I think you are right the core plugs will have to come out. I did change the head in 2008? and the block didnt look gunged up but will have to get in there particularly as Nick says at that back pot.
Are they known to block up at the back pot?

To Richard: Ive had my eye on the steering box for a while to tackle but thought while the engine is out would be better to do! Its been covered on the forum before by our comrades/brethern

Also thanks Neil re the point on the non failure for the leaking box! I wasnt sure so thought would play safe.
If its a leaking shock absorber thats a fail isnt it? Thats perhaps what swayed my thinking

Any way will have a short session today in the garage see what I can get done

Regards
