Ask Neal Welch because he has fitted them.

I'm laughing at the way HRDC conducts itself - Academy is a constant source of amazement and amusementNeil Evans wrote:Are you laughing at my comment or the fact that Motobuild have got it wrong...

Neil Welch asked me to look at his at Hibaldstow because the spring eyes were striking the body...Dave Clark wrote:Ask Neal Welch because he has fitted them.

This is how they are on an academy racer...

Re: Spa Classic 2017 Prep Begins
In their defense, Neal's car has had some serious welding done in the area and may be contributing to the lack of clearance. Photo shows an Academy racer with the Motobuild springs fitted. Looking at the picture there seems to be hardly any clearance, but if the springs are already straight they're already at their maximum length and any spring movement will take the shackle and spring eye away from the chassis member... Thoughts?Big Daddy wrote:Neil Evans wrote:Neil Welch asked me to look at his at Hibaldstow because the spring eyes were striking the body...

Re: Spa Classic 2017 Prep Begins
Running out of travel on any suspension component is never good news. If spring eye touches chassis rail, spring rate will increase exponentially affecting the outer loaded rear tyre (the critical one). Sudden jump in tyre slip angle will result in sudden oversteer and excitementNeil Evans wrote:... Thoughts?
Academy rear springs appear to be too long. Acceptable on the initial prototype perhaps, but inexcusable if they are the series mandated part sold to many customers...
Re: Spa Classic 2017 Prep Begins
Watched Academy cars lurch into oversteer around Quarry Corner at Castle Combe last year. Also they are prone to spinning the inside rear wheel. Neither characteristic will benefit lap times...

Re: Spa Classic 2017 Prep Begins
Apart from raising the ride height, what would be the disadvantage of making the shackle plates longer ?
Re: Spa Classic 2017 Prep Begins
Roll centre doesn't change although springs would have to reprofiled. Otherwise longer shackle plates should work ok. But probably easier to make springs of the correct length...

Funny you should mention that.....Big Daddy wrote: Sudden jump in tyre slip angle will result in sudden oversteer and excitement

Just catching up on the forum but yes pointed this out on mine to Neil and queried it. Now seen it on mine, the screenshot above which I sent Neil and a third car all showing the same so no longer thinking mine might have been remade incorrectly as originally suspected or even a one off issue with my springs. I have also considered extended the shackles as this would be pretty easy for me to do but was not sure of what may happen as a result.

Re: Spa Classic 2017 Prep Begins
In your case, Neal I'd suggest the long term fix is, since the spring hangers are bodged currently, rebuild them with the mount an inch further back. A short term fix may well be longer swinging shackles, but they will be working outside of the optimum setting...

Modify the car's structure so that aftermarket springs of the wrong length actually fit

Re: Spa Classic 2017 Prep Begins
It's not an option I'd consider if the structure was sound and as Austin intended but in Neal's case we established it needs rebuilding anyway...Big Daddy wrote:Modify the car's structure so that aftermarket springs of the wrong length actually fit
