I know it well as my mum lives about 5 miles from Nick's former holiday cottage. It's one of the best routes I've driven in Wales. Totally unspoilt and almost deserted, except for people who want to be there. The road up to the Elan Valley reservoirs is highly recommended as well...
From where Neil ?
Mum lives at Ffair Rhos, about five miles south of Pont-rhyd-y-groes, where Nick's former holiday home is located...
The road to the Elan Valley reservoirs leaves the Mountain Road about half way between Rhayader and Cwmystwyth. It follows the string of reservoirs down the valley and eventually heads back to Rhayader. The reservoirs supply much of Birmingham's water...

here is a better prospective of the start of the mountain road just outside Rhayader & the cattle grid at the bottom of the long climb (2.07 mins) & at around 3.29 mins that's when i had to change into second gear which i discribed in Spotlight, now you can see what it's like getting up in & especially all those years ago with 4 occupants, a cat & luggage & in the dark, that Fiesta is starting to struggle, look at the altitude at the top starting from 210m going up to 480m, at 6.47 mins he turns off for the Elan Valley, shame he didn't carry on the mountain road
if anyone fell on hard times and needed to sell a car to eat, then you would take someone's money if they were standing in front of you with hard cash.
nostalgia would count for very little when you see him munching on a ginsters steak and ale slice.
