Re: 863 EMD Restoration
Well Im trying Nick, as I know I may, its just a may, run out of time if not then a long gap. I want to get to the stage whre i can get it back to my welding man then its up to him then I can get on with the bits to prepare. I may even have it sprayed whilst away too so want to get the strip down clean up to leave options what to do next.
I must say its been a fight getting most parts off dont remember the last A30 been as bad as this one! That was 30 years ago mind when I was a mechanic and a young chap fit as a butchers dog!
I even welded up that car with an electric welder which I still have under the bench! Me and a mechanic mate sprayed up the car with an electric spray kit with Tekaloid paint as I mentioned before on here!

On this car the grill is painted over the chrome surface! Is this standard or is the work of a previous owner

Sorry Barry totally missed your comment here. Thanks for the advice I did have auto sparks in mind after your comments and others before. Not sure what you meant on directions though?btriplett wrote:hi John,
The loom from Autosparks as hugely recommended here on the thread. I had them incorporate turn signals and relays into it. The Control and fuse boxes I just found on ebay.
I expect to be whizzing from the Borders through God's country toward the end of the first week in November. Shall I PM you for directions?
Barry

Re: 863 EMD Restoration
Ive done a bit more this Saturday afters on 22nd Oct 2011. Thw screws for the regulator and the fuse box were siezed solid and the heads of the screws were too far rusted so when I removed these two units I copped em out as they were kn-----d!
I come to get these out today having saturated em in anti-rust one screw ended up breaking in so gout the blowtorch and had to use the molegrips to get one out see photos
Gave the bulkhead and engine bay and lower inner chassis a good scraping and ended up with a bag full of carp! Will use a power tool with cleaning head next then a wash down!
more to come

Re: 863 EMD Restoration
OMG,it's stripped, just a little tip which does help save components rather than using a flame type tool a hot air gun directed right on the stubbon bolt/nut or whatever can expand the siezed part & help to undo it, i have done it & even salvaged rubber/plastic parts

Re: 863 EMD Restoration
Might try that hot air tip from now on. The voltage regulator and fuse box had to be changed in any case. The ones in the photos are spare used ones Ive found in my stowed away spares. They look ok but the regulator is spade connectors not the original screw connectors!

Re: 863 EMD Restoration
Good work, John. I had to drill and tap the rotten screws on my VR and fusebox.
The comments from my friends are all correct. Closer to time I will PM you with a date. I have a few used tea bags and an empty single malt bottle I can bring, if that will help.
Cheers.

Re: 863 EMD Restoration
Been doing more
Started to get axle off to really clean up and get as many bits off for me to prepare whilst car is away at welding. The plan is that I put the axle back on alll cleaned up and painted so reducing the muck left to deal with on return.
well one forward spring pin was siezed in whilst one side was fee what a bonus. Both shacles were siezed in solid. On the rear N/S i decided to form a hole through the wheel carrier to allow a drift to be used along with loads of heat from the blow torch and it evenyaully worked
