Now multi tasking!!!. Brakes and back axle. Decided to cure leaking diff seal and change half shafts for MG Midget ones. At the same time i decided to change rear wheel bearings. These were found to be in very poor condition.

Working on A30 at the weekend when interested neighbour visited...we passed the time of day...talked about old car's...then he mentioned that he might have something that that would fit my A30!!! Returning after 5 minutes with these!!! Downton?? Actually can anybody confirm if there is enough clearance to fit twin HS4's?

I may be wrong but it looks like home brewed to me.

I think carb to inner wing clearance may be a problem.

Think the rear carb float chamber will foul the steering idler but its hard to see from the photos as the manifold has the carbs closer together than a normal BMC one, but as Dave says its the inner wing clearance that may be a problem. They are 1 1/2 inch carbs probably only suitable for a 1275.

Hi Gents
Thanks for the information. Looking at the car I think clearance may be any issue. I already have Oselli torquemaster master manifold with HS4 so might try both options. Attached is photo of original Downton brazed manifold, mine is the same with the exception of servo take off

Then it may be genuine.

If so you have a valuable set of carbs and inlet there, even if they won,t do for an A30/35

Thanks Dave
I wonder how much more of this type of stuff is hiding at the back of peoples shed,s?. The person who gave me the carbs also mentioned that he used to have the matching cylinder head!! But it was thrown away.......!!

hard to tell from the pictures, but does the cylinder sit horizontal with the road surface? if so, that a good solution.

Hi Yes
Spacer allows it to be parallel to the road

Brakes done, Suspension rebuilt...lets check out the wiring...OH DEAR!!! Interesting that all electrics worked on my car with no nasty burning smells. I was basically going to tidy up wiring and remove some later additions. Once I had stripped back the loom tape most of the insulation was very brittle with several bullet connectors burn't out. I am going to make my own loom with additions for flashing indicators, fog and high level brake lights with additional relays and inertia cut out switch for electric fuel pump. Better safe than sorry....
