Re: Telescopic rear shock absorbers
I used Mini front dampers on the rear of my son's A35 (the orange one). I made a simple (but substantial) top plate that bolted to the original damper locating holes and welded a long bolt to the front edge of the lower spring plate. You need to get the spacing right and it is pretty tight on the driver's side due to the handbrake linkage.
I'm sure the purists will say that welding the bottom bolt anneals it but it seems to be lasting well at the moment as the conversion was fitted about a year ago and the car is used as everyday transport. Because of the fairly shallow angle the dampers run at, the bushes have to move quite a bit so it's a good idea to lubricate them with something like a silicon spray or the squeaking drives you mad!
On my A30 I carried out a similar conversion using MG Metro Turbo dampers (just happened to have a pair in the garage) but as they have a pin top, it is more complicated and doesn't work as well (and they squeak even more).

Thank you ,for reply , spent the day. Working on car , I now have telescopic. Rear dampers / shock absorbers ,working , just done a short test drive , seems to work ok , copes with bumps pretty well , and got rid of that irritating knock noise from the old worn originals ,

Re: Telescopic rear shock absorbers
Hello , a couple of photos ,not very good I am afraid ,had to hold torch underneath ,,,
You can see my bottom plate is from a Morris minor ,give me a bit of scope to re position if required to alter angle of damper ,also top plate I have made my fixing lug a little more reward , so end result is damper is at a
Reasonable angle , set up need a bit of juggling to set units so they don't either top or bottom out ,
My rear springs are new and car sit higher ,still got a couple of breeze block in the boot ,very slowly freeing
Up , ( the spring are another story)
The right side be a bit Cearfull to set them in closer to wheel , as to miss the brake rod linkage ,so a modified
Plate is required , hope photos are of some interst ,
Regards Roy
PS ,I struggle to get photos up ,image file to big ,so I made them in black and white ,that seem to do it

What shocks did you fit?
