As it says on the tin, General and off Topic area, talk about anything in here (within reason!)

You can also use http://imageresize.org to resize your photos simply before using the forum's upload feature (resizing to 25% works well for larger photos). Should work on phones etc too.

What's the filesize limit for uploads?

I can't find the setting at the moment, but I loaded one of around 2.35Mb as a test .. that's a fairly high definition image from an iPhone ..

So we must be able to set the limit lower to stop members accidentally uploading photos that are too large and using up expensive server space? Then hopefully storage on our own server will be a viable option without too great an expense? Given the value of the forum including it's photos, this would seem a good use of the club's resources even if it did cost a little more (in my opinion!)

It is definitely on my 'to-do' list ... looking at the resources we have and what we might need.

We have some features we want to add, some to help run the club, but obviously the aim is to help members and owners. We are looking at several options but also need to ensure your membership is spent wisely.

It's actually very interesting when you start researching how many offer very similar disk allowances ..

Think the current 250MB limit is fine, because the repro on screens is great, we just need to offer users several different options to reduce their photos down to this size. I'm happy to cover the "compress" option. You can also do it through a "share" option as well, ie take picture on your phone, press share option and email to yourself. I've just taken a photo with my Microsoft phone which was 1.6MB and the image that was automatically attached to the email was 287KB. A simple size reduction or cropping would take that down below 250MB. All Best Ed

Have you seen the amount of advertising they are currently carrying? I'd stopped using them as a host a while back as my pop up and ad blocker software got so it couldn't keep up...

I'm happy to pull together a quick "how-to" in a post or PDF if anyone would like one ... :study:

It's actually not that difficult once you have managed to get back into photobucket .. they provide a simple "download album" option that creates a zip file of your images and downloads this to your pc/laptop.

Exactly - the way they can make a profit on these 'free' services is through advertising. Allowing people to post images embedded in external forums (bypassing their main site) bypasses the adverts (except for the person originally uploading the photo). Services like Facebook also rely on advertising (combined with lots of personal data collection!) - hence why you can't (I assume...I don't use Facebook myself) embed facebook photos directly to forums either.

You get what you pay for, and all that!
