Engine Identification

Post by Neil Evans »

803 engines have an oil filter that mounts horizontally.

948 engines usually have '950' cast into the block adjacent to the fuel lift pump.

1098 and 1275 engines have a plate attached to the block adjacent to the fuel lift pump that's stamped '1098' or '1275'...

1275 engines do NOT have removable tappet chest covers either ..

But that will not fit between the front shocks of an A30 or A35 ... and not a lot of drive to gearbox either ....

I realise that but threw in the comment as I find it odd that they made a major improvement to the inline 1275 engine by leaving them out but 15 years later, did a huge redesign for the A Plus engine, but left the tappet chest covers in...

not sure if the cam followers 'fall out' if the block is turned upside down, i know the followers fit from the underside & then you fit the cam, so what stops them falling through?

They do. They are also easy to pull out with a push rod if you're unlucky. I always wiggle the push rods as I withdraw them to safeguard from this...

they still could slide out though while it's upside down with the head off if you was say doing a sump job  , but it won't worry me as i won't be fitting a 1275cc

why on earth they didn't have a casting "lump" to stop them falling into the casing is beyond me. How do you get them back into place if they fall in? must be a real mission!

If it's got the tappet covers then you can reseat them from the side if they come out with the pushrod. I've known a few Mini owners that have had to do that .. means all the manifolds have to come off too!

If it's a 1275, don't turn it up the right way without a camshaft! They drop in from the crankcase side and are stopped from going further by the block casting.
