Door Glass Assembly Sequence

Post by Neil Evans »

ronpal wrote:I am planning the door rebuild on our 2 door A35 and see the following operations,in no particular order.

1 Fit rear L shaped window channel
2 Fit front vertical window channel
3 Fit quarter light assembley[
4 Wangle window glass assembly into door inner
5 Install window lifter ,echanism
6 fit door latch and operating bar complete
7 Swear a lot

I have tried the following sequence and come to a dead end.

3 1 6 7 4 7 stop

What would be the right sequence
6 - 3 - 2 - 4 - 1 - 5 - 7 (optional)

The glass goes in from below.

The 'L' shaped channel goes in from above but you need to bend the bottom end straight and reshape it once it's installed. Put masking tape over any paintwork that you don't want scratched...

On 4 door cars it's easier than two door cars...

Door Dismantling Sequence

Post by Neil Evans »

1. Remove window lifter mechanism. NB. A small hole in the end of the lift arm carries a steel ball... Care is needed not to loose it...
2. With the glass down, pull the felt strip from the upper part of the L shaped channel to expose the retaining screws. Remove these and the screw from the lower end of the channel.
3. Next, pull the L shaped channel up and out through the window hole.
4. Remove the bolt from the lower end of the front vertical window channel and the screw that secures it half way up and ease the channel from the rear edge of the quarterlight frame.
5. The glass can now be removed downwards.

Everybody looses the ball bearing from the lift arm... Many cars will have been apart before and will already have them missing... They are 5.5mm and are readily available from bearing suppliers...

The lock barrel is held in by a spring steel retaining clip, with legs that splay out as the lock is pushed through the hole... They can be fiddly to remove as they're designed for ease of assembly rather than removal... I usually drill a hole through the frame to access the hidden leg, adjacent to the lock, where it will be hidden behind the rubber door seal. Others have suggested wrapping a zip tie tightly around it works...
