AV5 axle Ratio
AV5 axle Ratio
I have in my collection of bits a rear axle from a 57 AV5 van, trying to ascertain what ratio SHOULD be in the axle, I have checked the internet and have come up with several different choices ranging from 4:7 thru to 5:3, I think it should be 5:1, without dropping the diff out it there any stampings, tag, or easy way to check?
Re: AV5 axle Ratio
The 948cc vans had the same diff as the saloons, 4.55 but were on 5.60 tyres so the road speed was 14.72 mph/1000rpm. There is a stamping on the outside of the diff, normally under 60 years of crud, that should, for example on a 3.9 diff 10/39 (divide one into the other).
Re: AV5 axle Ratio
Number of teeth on pinion and crownwheel is stamped on the case. Just divide larger by smaller number and you have the diff ratio (unless someone has changed the internals).
Alternatively physically check the number of pinion rotations for each revolution of the half-shafts.

Re: AV5 axle Ratio
found the stamping, after an hour of gunking and jet washing, I now smell and am rather moist, the ratio is a 9/41 which is a 4:55
