Master Cylinder Adjustment

Post by Neil Evans »

Many cars have the rod adjustment set incorrectly on the master cylinder. With the piston touching the circlip there should be 1/8in of free play at the brake pedal. Adjustment is made by releasing the lock nut and moving the stirrup up or down the thread.

Hi Neil,

We all appreciate your expertise but where you know so much you sometimes leave out important details that beginners like myself need.

Please can you expand on this article to explain what is the consequence of not having this adjusted correctly?

Eg, loads of pedal travel, brakes dragging, or ?

Thanks a lot, Andrew.

If you get it wrong you either have less pedal travel than the optimum (pedal is nearer the floor at rest) or the brakes drag/remain on as the fluid cannot return to the reservoir as the rubber seal is obstructing the hole...
