Road Tax, Historic Vehicle

Post by weydale1949 »

I recently bought a 1964 Austin A35 van, but when I went to the DVLA page it had the road tax down as:
Vehicle details
Vehicle Make: AUSTIN Date of first registration 22 March 1964
Year: of manufacture 1964 Cylinder capacity (cc) 998cc CO₂Emissions Not available
Fuel type PETROL
Vehicle status Not taxed Vehicle colour GREY

6 month rate £79.75 12 month rate £145.00 6 monthly by direct debit totalling £76.13 12 monthly by direct debit totalling £145.00 Monthly by direct debit totalling £152.25 (Monthly payment of approximately £12.69)

To anyone with more knowledge than myself, the question is why does it come up as having to pay road tax, when surely it should be tax exempt as it's a classic car/van
Kind regards

Sounds like its been off the road for a time so you need to send off V5 to Swansea and get tax changed to Historic.

Not sure when the tax free cut off year is, but assuming that your Van is old enough to benefit from free tax, then I suggest that you register it with DVLA as a Historic vehicle. Once registered as an Historic vehicle then you will be able to apply for your tax without paying for it.
Hope this helps.

I would have thought, that when I sent it for change of ownership the DVLA would have automatically done so.
I can only assume that their computerised system doesn't actually regonised Historic vehicles by the year they were made.
Thanks for the replies

Thinking about this now, with REV I applied for a new log book in my name, which I took to the post office to get the tax, the Lady at the counter asked for money, and I explained that due to REV's age I did not have to pay for the tax, She asked me to sign a form for Her, after a quick look at my signature on the form She gave it back to me with the free tax disc. I questioned why I had to sign a form that She did not keep, and She said that that was what I had to do, She thought it odd too.
I think She kept my log book, and I received a new one with Historic on it a few weeks later.

at the moment with the current government which introduced it in the first place but it was stopped when Mr Bliar's party got in & only then reinstated when these lot got back in, so don't hold your hopes up too much!
