Many a serviceable shock absorber has been thrown away because its been allowed to loose some fluid and has air in the system. A front shock absorber may appear to be unserviceable on the vehicle, but it may just need topping up with fluid. It's impossible to do this on the vehicle as the arm has to pass throughout the full movement of the arm to expel any trapped air. The unit is quite difficult to mount in a vise due to its awkward shape so either G clamp it to the bench or mount it on a piece of angle iron that can then be clamped in the vice...
Remove the filler plug and add fluid until full. Work the arm up and down through its full travel a few times, making sure the chamber remains topped up, you should find that there's now resistance throughout the travel in both directions...

Re: Front Shock Absorbers
Neil,
I've done this and had some success, so thanks,
Now question is, I would like more damper power, stiffer dampers. I've adjusted the vales and I'm still not sure that it's up to what I want. My next question is, can you buy / get hold of new or uprated vales?
Thanks
Mark
