Herbert Austin and Australia

Post by DaveB »

Hi,
Bit warm here today, 34C, so staying inside sorting out photos on the computer. Here are a couple of photos I took at the National Museum of Australia, Canberra. Part of the description reads:

"The Wolseley shearing machine 1925-31
English engineer Herbert Austin worked closely with Wolseley to develop the shearing handpiece in Australia. He also began designing portable engines for driving sheep-shearing machines. When the Wolseley company opened its Birmingham factory in 1893, Austin returned to England to become its manager. (He later designed and built the first Wolseley prototype automobile and set up his own motor company in 1905).

By 1896, the Wolseley company was making portable engines to power shearing machines, and later, cream separators. Many engines were exported to Australia and New Zealand. The three-horsepower petrol engine in this shearing plant was also used in Wolseley milking machines, circular saws and chaffers."
