Long lost lorry driver's art of roping and sheeting. Back then open flatbeds were the norm but have almost been replaced by curtain-siders and box bodies now...

The only way to get through the Mersey Tunnel was to close all the car vents and take a big breath and hope that you could get through before the fumes got you!
