once a day classic picture thread

Post by WAC_Paul »

I have been collecting classic pictures from the 50's and 60's of our cars for a while now. These have been collected from all over the web so thought I should start sharing them with you all.

I will post a picture each day and if anyone else wants to join in please feel free - who knows - I may even have a picture of your car from years gone by. Please keep it to just one picture a day though as I would love this to become an on going interesting thread.

So I'll start today with an A30:

One a day? I think we can manage that... how about a Viva van?

Bedford HA is the correct name but if you grew up when BT (and everyone else) used these, you'll have always called it a Viva van, I'm sure. This was LTO 655P, a 1976 van, ex-British Rail, so yes, it had once been yellow, like so many. The photo dates from early 1984, just after my dad brushed it with this rather strong blue. Trust me, it was a huge improvement on the rather tatty red it came in.

I'll be very interested to see what else pops up; I have quite a library to pick from!

Nice little Ruby, looks like a rare "Smokers Hatch" model with no bumpers, or maybe they'd just been removed. That one was originally registered in Kent in 1936 (CKT) :D

Here's a photo of my current daily driver from way before I owned it, taken about 1980 I think. Not sure what happened to the sister car.

My dad owned a couple of these (and I worked on dozens as a Post Office Telephones apprentice). The first he bought, a 'J' reg, was a similar blue, but had originally been orange with a black roof, came from the fleet of Ready Mixed Concrete (Thames Valley) Ltd. When he aquired it when it was 7 years old, it was very much a project, having been used as the dog kennel at a local scrap yard! Once rebuilt it gave around 10 years reliable service(though the engine did once drop a valve on the A1). It was replaced with a 'Y' reg model (so one of the last) in march 1987, ex Anglian Water Authority, bought from BCA Nottingham car auctions. I'll try and dig out some photos.
