Wobbly Exhaust
Wobbly Exhaust
Hello,
I was having an unusual knocking sound. At first I thought my engine was eating itself or maybe the gearbox but then I realised at least one of the noises was louder inside the car.
A quick look under shows that the exhaust can wobble around a lot from just before the axle where the silencer is.
Here I see a single support, almost like a strap. I can see it would stop it falling down too far but does nothing to stop it swinging left and right.
Is that normal?
I couldn't get a good look as the ground was wet and I didn't fancy getting my clean clothes covered in muck but the exhaust did seem solid at the gearbox end and also the tail pipe end.
Is there any other mounts other than the Gearbox end,the weird strap thing and the tail pipe that should hold this together? if not, I'm guessing that there is a rotten section in the exhaust that is allowing it to sway.
Thoughts please.
Thanks, Andrew

Re: Wobbly Exhaust
Check the rubber bobbin mount hasn't deteriorated. It mounts that strap to the floor. There should be two more at the rear mount too.

Re: Wobbly Exhaust
early fitment was a webbed steel strap which attached direct to the healboard, the 'cotton reel' type had a twisted metal strap

Re: Wobbly Exhaust
Did the early type stop it swinging?
I'll get it up on the stands.
I think I need "warm garage" on my Christmas list.

Re: Wobbly Exhaust
the earlier was a heavily webbed wire 'PCJ' has got that type fitted but the 'cotton reel'/metal strap does the same trick, there must be something loose somewhere, have you got the strap off the bell housing up front?Hurtzberg wrote:Did the early type stop it swinging?

Re: Wobbly Exhaust
I'd recommend a warm garage. I could live in mine...apart from the lack of shower and a beer fridge.Hurtzberg wrote:Did the early type stop it swinging?

Re: Wobbly Exhaust
The bellhousing one is solid. The tail end is solid.
The strap in the middle wobbles.
Should the middle strap stay still or is it designed to sway for some reason?
Thanks All.

Re: Wobbly Exhaust
the flex is either in the wire (early type) or cotton reel rubber of the late type, so could the back cotton reels be loose??Hurtzberg wrote:The bellhousing one is solid. The tail end is solid.

Re: Wobbly Exhaust
Had a good look today.
The centre strap is rubber and only supports the weight of the exhaust, it does nothing to stop it swaying.
The tail end doesn't seem to have any play from the tail pipe due to lack of leverage but from the centre, there is enough pull to squish the rubber bobbins like Gazza said.
Fixed a few other issues with fueling/ignition that was causing the rough running that in turn caused the sway so the car sounds reasonable again now.

Re: Wobbly Exhaust
looks like someone found a quick solution fix by fitting a rubber strap, the wire & metal strap doesn't move much so it should solve that problem, i'm sure someone has oneHurtzberg wrote:Had a good look today.
