gearbox speedo drives

Post by Alan »

is there a difference in the speedo drive on an 803 and 948 gearbox? vaguely remember seeing a plastic one and a metal one years ago. which is which or are they both the same?

is the speedo cable the same for both speedo drives also?

Just read through an article on here about gearboxes and the speedo drives were different, I think the earlier were metal and the latter plastic, will check and come back.

OK, 803 had a coarse tooth metal drive, then the 948 had a finer toothed metal drive initially, which was replaced with a fine toothed nylon drive. Apparently the finer toothed metal and nylon drives for the 948 are interchangeable. :study:

 and here's what they look like, good news is that they are very easy to change over, if you want to use A35 speedos in an A30 then you simply take off the tailshaft cover and the locknut and swap the drive on the tailshaft over and then switch the drive to the speedo cable over. All A30 are metal to metal course drive and as mentioned later A35 gearboxes had a nylon drive shown on picture which is interchangeable with the fine metal drive
You will of course need to have the right diff in to get correct speedo readings but guessing that the usual reason for this is to fit a higher diff in the low geared A30.

I once fitted a gearbox to an A35 that came from a Mo**is Mi**r van... Looked identical but the speedo drive was different...
