Suspension blocks and bell housing holes

Post by GoodwoodLapper »

I have 2 quick questions. Looking down the back of the engine to the top of non standard bell housing, I wonder if this oval hole is supposed to be left open or if a rubber bung exists?

My second question regards the block in the centre of the next picture. It has Midget suspension and I know the previous owner lifted the car a little. Is this how they achieved it? Therefore if I were to experiment with the width of the block, making it thinner would effectively lower and perhaps remove some of the positive camber?

Many thanks

that is a standard 'ribbed' gearbox post 1962, there is an oval 'bung' you can fit

Is that block under the damper arm not a non original bump stop?

Er... No and no...

At 'normal' ride height there would be a gap between the block and the shock absorber arm so altering its thickness can't alter much if anything at all...

The bump stop is the one mounted in the centre of the spring. This one is the rebound rubber, and yes, it's not original equipment...

Interesting. So if its not a bump stop and its not affecting the height of the suspension. What is it doing?

it's just a rebound buffer for your shock absorber, this is what it should be...

When you take off, it prevents the lever arm from clanking on the body...

They are there to prevent droop travel when the vehicle was fitted with a rack, because the suspension travel on droop strained at the rack and it,s mountings.

The rack was removed before the vehicle was sold - not for that reason though.

Now that it has "normal" steering those blocks could be replaced with the standard rubber rebound stops.

And that is most definitely NOT a standard 1098 gearbox ! (it had a rubber bung in there when I sold it)
