engine size?
engine size?
I have 5 A series engines and although I am able to establish that 4 of them are either 803cc or 948cc, one has the engine number 10MA-U-H 68554 and I am assuming this is either a 998cc or one of the other sizes in the 1000cc range and would appreciate advice on what cc it is and whether it is suitable for fitting to an a30 with the a30 gearbox. Also I have several back plates, thick, thin, pressed steel with a lip, which of these should I use with this combination of engine and box?
One other is marked 8-G162 ES36521, What does the G and the ES denote?

Re: engine size?
10 usually designates it as a 1098cc .. MA is probably a MM lump.
8-G could be a gold-seal replacement.
They are both in-line engines? It's just the Mini (and larger derivatives) uses the same engine but obviously with a different crank and end bearing cap ..

Re: engine size?
There's a bloke on the minor forum who has a database of a- series engines. If you provide details of yours he will probably tell you more than any sane person would ever want to know.

Re: engine size?
To add to what's already been said, the 1098cc BMC Service Parts List AKD3411 lists 10MA-U-H as a high comp 1098 MM engine (U being a centre gear change 'box), and 8G 162 is a high comp 1098 engine for A40 mkII and MM. ES is a mystery.

Re: engine size?
Thanks for advice everyone. So its a 1098 cc engine but is it suitable for fitting to an a30 with a30 gearbox, advice appreciated. I am tossing up between having either this engine or a 948 reconditioned, would prefer the extra power from the 1098 it its suitable and would upgrade suspension and brakes to discs.
Re: engine size?
I've run the 1098 / A30 gearbox combination for years and personally think it's brilliant, lovely torquey motor quick off the mark around town, and 60 / 65 mph cruising on the motorway. A30 is very low geared so you need to change the diff ratio, my 4.22 works extremely well and others will also use the 3.9. The A35 van with a 1098 engine in it used the 4.22 diff. A30 gearbox is also low geared compared to A35 but it depends what you want, it's perfectly able to handle the extra power and the low gears mean that 1st gear is unnecessary so you have a lovely 3 speed all synchro gearbox and you can go pretty much anywhere in 3rd and top. It will pull strongly from 25 in 4th and pulls up many hills in 4th as well. In terms of backplates you use the thin one with a smooth gearbox which is all the A30 ones and A35 saloons and the thick one with the ribbed gearbox. I also use the stronger 9 spring clutch cover plate which was specced on the more powerful A series engines running with a smooth gearbox eg early 1098s and Frog Eye Sprite etc which works with the standard A30 driven plate and release bearing. If you have any additional questions please PM me or happy to chat to you by phone.
Re: engine size?
I think the 1098 is underrated as a cost effective upgrade - plentiful, cheapish and useful 50% power increase over the 803

Re: engine size?
I'm definitely part of the 1098 fan club! just another thought on this, I've never had any premium added when I've declared the 1098 and single 1.1/4 SU for insurance purposes, because it was a standard engine fitted in the A35 van. so you are just updating to an engine from a later model.
1098 crankshaft.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my question, I have just bought a 1969 Morris Minor so now have this and the a30 to restore. The MM also has a 1098cc engine which starts OK but the big ends and main bearings are shot, (Noisy knocking from lower part of engine). Can anyone tell me the standard crankshaft measurements so that I can order the correct size replacement bearings by seeing if it is standard or has been reground.
Re: engine size?
BEaring shells should be marked with size although someone will be able to give you sizes if you need them, think they are in the Vizard A series tuning manual for instance.
