top one is i guess an A40 but not sure if 948cc or 1098cc without checkinggazza82 wrote:So I have four clutch release arms, two of which are the same and in the middle of this pic. They look like 22G167 and have the ring end. One has the pivot bolt.
Of the others one has a pivot point much higher up near the release bearing fork, 2A3098?, and the other has the other type of end with what I assume is the type for a hydraulic clutch, 22G168(?).

"Paul, when you had the muscle building setup, were you using the 1275 box or the smoothcase?"
I was using a ribbed box (not a Midget one) at the time............I'll need to ask the 'mechanic' how he adapted the linkage.
Is there definite 'proof' that the Midget boxes are stronger than the standard ribbed box?

Re: Gearbox overhaul
Thanks Paul, no idea but in my case it is midget ribbed vs a35 smooth.
Sounds like The 1098 minors are mechanical (I believe) so as long as the pivot point on their ribbed boxes are the same as the midget ribbed, all I'd need to do is fit the clutch fork from a ribbed Minor.
These are 10 a penny so worth a try to get on the road quicker.

They have a different part number and people pay a premium for them, but what the actual difference is I'm not aware...Paulc wrote:

Re: Gearbox overhaul
Probably gearing ratios. The 1098 is a much higher 1st so acceleration will be slower. Designed for heavier cars.
Gear lever is also different on 1275 boxes.

Re: Gearbox overhaul
Any thoughts on how to test this box without the hassle of fitting it and finding out the hard way?
I've taken the side cover off and it all seems shiny and clean.
Did just spot that there is a chunk cut from the bottom of the bellhousing. Any reason for that and does it make this scrap?

Re: Gearbox overhaul
Midget has closer ratios, and uses needle roller bearings on the intermediate gears rather than a brass bush - I believe this make sure the box tougher but I'm sure the life of the box is more influenced by the way it is used.

Re: Gearbox overhaul
Looks to me as if "someone" has cut a chunk out of the bell housing , probably to see if they can free a stuck clutch.
I would be happy to use that gearbox if all else is OK.
Difficult to assess a gearbox without stripping it, but look for chips or marks on the gear teeth and see how much "waggle" there is on the first motion shaft as a very rough guide as to front bearing condition. Even new boxes have some play so be aware. Te only real way to check if bearings and selectors are OK is to fit it and drive it or strip it out. Even stripping means that some experience is needed to assess whether some parts are re-useable or not. IIRC a rebuild kit is quite cheap once you have decided that all it needs is a refresh with new bearings seal and gaskets.

Careful, you will be in trouble using words like waggle. Mr. Clark!

I would say impossible, unless there is something glaring, such as chipped teeth or visible rust.Dave Clark wrote:

Years ago when I worked as a commercial vehicle mechanic I was given a second hand lorry gearbox to fit, but before doing so I had to change the top cover over as it was from an earlier model. I noticed that the gear train and selectors showed a huge amount of wear and I initially rejected the idea of fitting it as I feared it was scrap. The 'box worked perfectly for around 18 months of daily use, covering many thousands of miles...
