ANOTHER BRAKE QUESTION - SORRY
After having an exciting and rewarding day replacing both front flexi hoses, a leaking wheel cylinder and installing a Club spares frame cylinder, brakes bled out nicely.
Only problem is footbrake is now failing to release on rear wheels. They're jammed hard on - lucky for them!!-- but not me.
Have checked all rear drums, changed shoes, tried Neil's adjustment method, but still baffled.
I can release them by jiggling the actuator rod, that the yoke and handbrake cable fits to. They then release with a 'bang'.
Any ideas please - I think it might be something to do with the sliding link - but can't see anything wrong.
Cheers
Phil

Re: ANOTHER BRAKE QUESTION - SORRY
if the rear brake expanders Works, the Balance lever turns well, the Return spring is present, you have the sliding link and the rear brake link left to check. Disconnect the rear brake cable and check if the problem is still present when turning the Balance lever. If not, the problem is the sliding or the rear link. Probably the sliding link.

Re: ANOTHER BRAKE QUESTION - SORRY
Found problem - for some reason the sliding link was hitting the floor just below the frame cylinder fixing, even though it was at the bottom on the slotted holes in its bracket. Removed bracket and slotted holes where it fixes to floor and all now well.
Thanks

I would say you've adjustment issues further back. Needs setting up as per my recommended procedure...pick up phil wrote:Found problem - for some reason the sliding link was hitting the floor just below the frame cylinder fixing, even though it was at the bottom on the slotted holes in its bracket. Thank goodness for proper hydraulic rear brakes (A40 Mk2, Midget et al)...

Re: ANOTHER BRAKE QUESTION - SORRY
Thanks all sorted now, test drive - stopping!! - and a good pedal.
By the way does anyone have an easy way of attaching the rear wheel return springs to the shoes - especially the one on the sliding adjuster side where the spring has to go through a guide slot - my fingers aren't as nimble as they used to be!!

Re: ANOTHER BRAKE QUESTION - SORRY
Just to add...
If the hand brake stirrup is coming forward enough to hit the body you run the risk of the frame cylinder piston coming out of the frame cylinder enough to strike the frame cylinder securing bolts. At this point you no longer have a service brake on the rear wheels...
As for the brake springs, you can hold them in place on the shoes with small tapered wooden dowels poked through the remaining space...

Re: ANOTHER BRAKE QUESTION - SORRY
Hi Neil
Thanks for the dowel tip. It was the rod that jammed against the end of the floor where it goes up to the heelboard, below the mounting bracket. I'm sure it was OK before I stripped it down!!
