That's the thing, I don't want to fit an alternator. Just for interest the size of "hole" in the old style battery with the back cut out and guts removed is 8.3/4" ( 9" at a push) x 5.1/2" x 6.1/4"

Richard pointed out that you shouldn't but ... didn't say you can't. If it was all working 100% I can't see why not.

Two possible options: replace the dynamo with a Dynalite which is an alternator inside a dynamo body or investigate a solid-state control box that I've seen mentioned in car mags and on the net. That doesn't have the old style windings and magnetically operated switches the original has.

Both look externally like the existing parts.
