HS2 Float chamber gasket

Post by Nelly »

I ordered a new float chamber gasket so that I could replace if necessary when I opened it up. The new gasket is much thinner than the old (the old one is thicker and seems more 'rubbery'). Also, the new one (and I've tried two different new ones) are very slightly too small to fit over the lip on the float chamber (I think it would rip if I tried to force it, and certainly wouldn't sit flat). They also look so thin I'm not sure they would make a good seal anyway.

Currently using the old gasket as it looked still looked ok.

Anybody else found this problem?

Thanks, Sam

Never known these not to fit, can you post a picture of your carb and float chamber?

Sorry, not the most helpful pictures, but I don't want to remove the float chamber unnecessarily without a new gasket. Looks pretty standard otherwise though? The gaskets' shape and size looks the same new/old, but just won't sit around the 'ridge' as it's supposed to. I tried two different gaskets from different suppliers.

Photos before and after fitting - I know you can't really see much from them though!

Revisiting an old thread of ours - but we recently acquired an old SU HS2 for spares, and the new gaskets don't fit in this for the same reasons. So I'm thinking the new gaskets are just no good (despite buying two from different suppliers). See photos. The black one is the old gasket, thicker and slightly larger.

I guess they must fit new HS2s - just not 'proper' old ones! I would buy one from Burlen directly but the postage would be high for a little bit of paper, I think!

Best to make my own maybe when needed, maybe.

I got my Su gaskets from Burlens, fit was good ,have the same trouble if you buy from some of the other seller's so called gaskets, they are not that difficult to make for the carbs, the trouble is buying the right type of gasket material ,and you usually have to much left over which ups the cost, but how I cut a thin gasket like the one you are after is with the correct gasket from a wider than required piece cut the large hole with the correct size hole first it does need to be correct, fit on the bowl, next the small holes, and tighten down the top and trim round the out side with a sharp Art knife, hope you get a good gasket , I have found that many of the SU bowls have poor flanges to get a good fit especially if they have seen a lot of maintenance wear by none caring mechanics of the home type if you know what I mean.

I make my own gaskets. Use the old one as a template

These gaskets from Minispares are good so may as well buy them when getting other stuff otherwise postage costs make them a bit dear on their own. Ed

And for £5 you can join The Mini Forum's TMF+ scheme and get 7.5% off minispares prices.

Thanks for all the great tips :)

We have a few sheets of gasket paper so may well look into it when necessary.
