BAFFLED - BUT WHAT'S NEW - NOT A30/A35 EITHER

Post by pick up phil »

My Smart Roadster developed a problem last week - battery indicator warning light came on.

Uh I thought, belt snapped, alternator Knacked.

Managed to get home -belt OK, tested output 11.2 volts - no difference with revving.

Bought replacement alternator and had a great time fitting it and trying to fit new air con belt - the stretchy type, and alternator belt - manually adjustable. According to everything I've read engine turns anti clockwise, which I did.

Tried to start - solenoid clicks in, starter don't turn. Bugger I've disturbed main feed or similar.

Removed starter - even better job that alternator - all connections OK. Tested solenoid and starter in vice - all OK.

Tried rotating engine with crankshaft pully nut - nothing - appears seized up solid - refused to turn either direction. Removed spark plugs and all drive belts and still no movement.

Baffled is what I am!!!

Any ideas please - other than scrap it.

Cheers

given the scenario I've a couple of thoughts, firstly try removing starter again & checking that engine rotates.
The other thought, was it still in gear when you tried rotating the engine?

My first thought was is the battery charged, the starter will need full battery charge to spin the engine

Battery has been both disconnected and re connected after full charge.

When I first removed faulty alternator engine turned freely on crankshaft nut to remove belts. No problem.

Starter motor and spark plugs were in then.

New alternator fitted - starter solenoid clicking in, but starter not turning on fully charged battery. Even tried with booster battery and another fully charged battery - same result - solenoid clicked in but starter motor failed to turn. Thought I might have disturbed main cable to starter or flywheel ring gear may not be quite in line for starter dog to engage. Tried turning engine again on crankshaft nut - won't budge either way.

Starter motor removed - wiring all OK as it should be - engine still won't turn on crankshaft nut.

According to indicator on dash gearbox is in neutral. Car is up on stands with rear wheels removed.

Have also removed spark plugs - engine still won't turn.

Starter tested in vice - all seems OK.

Luckily its peed it down all day today so not had the pleasure of trying to fix it!!

For a sensible answer, did you try taking the handbrake off and spinning the rear wheels to confirm that the gearbox isn't stuck in gear?

I remember my old smart gearbox having a major brain failure at one point.

Sussed it thanks.

I'd managed to trap the crankshaft pulley with the alternator adjusting bracket. Bracket was just clamping pulley by about 2mm but it was clamped tight.

Just got to put starter back now and give it a whirl!!!
