I recently acquired an 1956 A30 Countryman with, supposedly, an 803cc engine. The engine is in bits in boxes in the back of the car, and it has a damaged cylinder and head and requires a full rebuild.
The block deck has the chassis number stamped on it where the engine ID tag should have been, so I suspect the tag was removed in order to skim it, then they lost it.
I recently spoke to a relative of the previous owner (who had it from new) and he said he seems to remember that it was he that burnt the original 803 when he was learning to drive, and they subsequently installed a different engine. He said there was a big difference in power after the installation of the 'new' engine.
This story is all going back 40-50 years, so he may have got his history a little mixed up. The car has been in dry storage for the last 30+years. So now I'm wondering weather or not I have the original engine or not... whether its an 803 or not, or if its a bigger one?
All I have to go by are these number cast into the block:

Anyone got any ideas how I can ID the engine size, at least?

OK.. i just realised, after referring to Vizard's, that the 803cc was the only engine in the series to have a 58mm diameter bore. So I ran down to the garage to measure mine, and it is indeed 58mm.
So I guess that solves that then! At least I know its the correct size... whether it was a replacement engine I don't know... but I found a few clues that point to it maybe being the original.
The pistons are not split-skirt, the big end bearings are 020, and I found an SU carb in my bag-o-bits. So I'm guessing that the increased 'power' that my uncle had experienced back in the 60's was probably after having the original engine machined and having a few mods done to it. Who knows, I never will

The 803 engine is easily identified by the oil filter which mounts horizontally, whereas on all the later engines it mounts vertically... The SU carburettor will have made a whole 3BHP difference...

Might be the original engine but only if you have a van/countryman. No saloons were bigger than 948cc.jon wrote:i think my eyes are giving up, that or my memory. yes it says 12G295. so thats good. and i got in contact with ivor searl engine re-builders and they have said that going by the casting numbers on the block it would appear to be a 1098 engine. so good news all round.log book says 1098 too but it's a shame it does'nt have the engine number on it then i would know if it was original to the car. hey ho...anyway as for rebuild i'm not to worried, i got it running befre i removed it and it was running sweet no missing or messing about so just a set of core plugs to be safe and a new ring gear as it's missing a tooth. then re-paint.
But you probably will never know. Engine number and chassis number were originally same (last few digits anyway).
