removal of front wings
I plan to take of the front wings of my van to check out what the condition of general area is like and also to allow for sill replacement. I notice that from the headlight down to the front valance there is no 'beading' I assume there should be a split line otherwise how does the wing come off. Someone must have welded or filled this , guess I will just have to remove paintwork to find out. see photo of van on welcome forum.

yes there should be a 'back to back' joint below the headlamp with nuts & boltsWill@Lisburn wrote:I plan to take of the front wings of my van to check out what the condition of general area is like and also to allow for sill replacement. Re: removal of front wings
Will, if you take the headlight and headlight bowl out you should then be able to see where the seam should be.

That sounds like a sensible approach.

Re: removal of front wings
got around to removing headlight and bowl. Had to hacksaw a couple of the bolts . bowl a bit rusted (should I repair or are they reasonably cheap to replace ?, can see the seam and have found rubber underneath a thin layer of paint and filler. I assume there should also be seam below the indicator light. There is alot more filler in this area and I have 'created' a seam. Also created a seam along small length of front valance where it should exist. Finding more rust than I had bargained for !! see some pictures

Re: removal of front wings
Well you have found the seam ok theres two bolts under the headlamp down that seam and another into the valance
I fitted new headlamp bowls to EMD but the chrome headlight bezels wouldnt go over the dome lip. I ended up buying twp later made bezels and still tight on

Re: removal of front wings
Thanks Nick, had a look at your link and can see where the bolts should be. from your pics I can now understand how the wing/valance interface should be. Mine is obviously rotted away at this overlap so when I get wing off I will need to see what repair the valance needs.
PS that is a mighty impressive project you undertook, and it provides great pics for aid of understanding

Re: removal of front wings
I notice that the thick layer of sealant that has been applied to 'protect' against corrosion makes it more difficult to find bolt, nuts and edges of parts. It would also seem that there is 'sweating' going on underneath the sealant as when I remove it the metal appears to be damp. anybody got a comment on this.
