Optional in-car heaters

Post by Demetri »

The in-car heater on an A30 Countryman was an optional extra, as we know.
Can someone inform me, in what other models was the same heater system used :?:

They were made by Smiths and were used in a lot of 50s cars. I think more commonly in the Land Rovers. The heaters were commonly known as fug stirrers!

The exact same ones as in the Austin A30?
I'd like it to look original :)

As the heaters were optional extras it was up to the owner to decide which one to fit. Most Austin dealers would try and sell you a Smith's heater, but others were available, Tudor and K-L for example. The K-L ones were £10-10s plus fitting so not cheap when one considers the average wage.

It looks like the ones on that link seem to be fitted under the dashboard. I think I like the idea of the engine bay mounted device, like the square Smiths one with the blower on the side.

i'm sure the under bonnet as used on saloons was also available for the Countryman models as a standard option

Does that include the A35 as well? Or did they change?

I saw this today, and I'm wondering if I should start collating all the various heater bits that I need, or whether it's wiser to hold out and buy a complete unit... box/blower/heater controls

Quite a lot of 'bits' needed for the engine bay heater. I have seen some engine bay type heaters that duct air only to the floor of the vehicle, I assume that fitting the ducts/vents to the screen was (at the time) considered too fiddly.

Great. I'll be in touch as soon as I've decided in what direction I want to go regarding installation of a heating system.
